Cover Letter for an Internship: Format and Examples
Keep your cover letter for internship applications shorter than one for a job: three paragraphs, 150 to 200 words. Say what you're studying and what you've done that connects to the work, then why you picked this internship over the others. Nobody expects work experience from an intern. They want proof that you started something on your own and finished it.
Key takeaways
- An internship cover letter is three short paragraphs, 150 to 200 words, shorter than one for a job.
- With no work experience, use a course project, club or NSS role, certification or competition, with a number attached.
- Say why this organisation in one specific line, and always give your availability dates.
- Leave out stipend, certificate and work-from-home questions, and send the letter as a PDF.
- Every project you mention in the letter must also appear on your resume.
The format comes first, then three examples: a first-year arts student, a BCom finance applicant and a mechanical engineering student. The people and companies are made up.
The short format for a cover letter for internship
This is the version for students with no experience, which is most people going for a first or second internship. Read the listing properly first. Many openings in our Internships listings spell out what the intern will do, and that tells you which project to mention.
Header: your name, city, email and phone, then the date, then the organisation's name. Same font as your resume.
Greeting: a real name if you can find one ("Dear Mr Thomas"), otherwise "Dear Hiring Team".
Paragraph 1, two sentences: the internship you're applying for, your course and year, and your college or city.
Paragraph 2, three or four sentences: one or two things you have actually done that connect to the work, such as a project, a society role, a competition or a skill you learned and then put to use. Say what came out of it.
Paragraph 3, two or three sentences: why this organisation, in one specific line, then your availability (dates, full-time or part-time, in person or remote) and a polite close.
Sign-off: "Regards" and your full name.
Leave out the objective statement, the list of strengths and your school marks.
What to write when you have no experience
When you're applying for an internship, all of these count as experience:
- a course project where you did a defined part of the work
- a role in a college club, fest or NSS unit where someone relied on you
- a certification or online course you finished and then used on something real
- a competition, a hackathon or something you built yourself
Choose whichever sits closest to the internship and attach one or two numbers to it. "Managed registrations for our fest" is weak. "Managed registrations for 420 participants across six events using Google Forms and a shared sheet" tells the reader you can handle detail.
Got nothing yet? Then write about what you've been learning and what you'd like to try. A first-year letter can get away with that. A third-year letter can't.

Dear Hiring Team, Sabujpath Foundation,
I'd like to apply for the winter research internship listed on your website. I'm a first-year BA Economics student in Kolkata.
I don't have work experience yet, but I've spent this semester learning to work with data. For a class assignment, I collected attendance figures for eight government schools near my home from their notice boards and compiled them in Excel, then wrote a two-page note on the months when attendance dropped. I also volunteer on Sundays teaching Class 6 maths at a local study centre.
Your recent report on learning gaps after the pandemic is why I want to intern with you specifically, and I'd like to learn how a real field survey is planned. I'm free full-time from 15 December to 15 February.
Regards, Ishita Banerjee
She admits to having no experience in one clause, then gets on with what she has done.
Internship cover letter sample 2: BCom finance internship
Mohammed is in the second year of BCom (Honours) in Hyderabad and wants a summer internship at a wealth advisory firm.

Dear Ms Reddy,
I'm applying for the Finance Intern (Summer 2027) role at Godavari Wealth Advisors. I'm in the second year of BCom (Honours) in Hyderabad, with corporate finance and financial markets as my electives.
As treasurer of our college's finance club this year, I run a paper portfolio competition for 60 members and update the standings every Friday in Excel using live closing prices. For my financial accounting course, I analysed three years of annual reports of two listed FMCG companies and compared their working capital cycles.
I'd value the chance to see how advisers turn that kind of analysis into advice a client can act on. I'm available full-time from 1 May to 30 June, at your Banjara Hills office.
Regards, Mohammed Faizan
He names his electives, puts a number on his club role and describes analysis he did himself. A finance recruiter knows straight away where he'd be useful.
Internship cover letter sample 3: engineering internship

Dear Mr Kulkarni,
I'm applying for the summer internship in your production engineering team at Sahyadri Auto Components, Chakan. I'm in the third year of BE Mechanical Engineering in Pune.
I'm part of our college's student Baja team, where I was responsible for the rear suspension mounts this season. I modelled them in SolidWorks, ran basic stress checks in ANSYS and worked with a local fabrication shop to get them welded within budget. Our car passed technical inspection at the national event. After a short lean manufacturing course, I used a time study to cut our rear subframe assembly time by about a third.
I'd like to see how these ideas work on a real production line, and your plant's machining and assembly work is the closest match to what I enjoy. I'm available from 1 June to 15 July.
Regards, Kiran Deshmukh
If you're an engineering student, a team project where you name the exact part you owned is the strongest thing you can put in an internship application letter.
Mistakes that get internship letters ignored
Top of the list is a full-page, job-style letter for a six-week internship. Someone working through a pile of intern applications won't get to the end of it.
Close behind is writing without knowing what the company does. "I want to intern at your esteemed company to gain industry exposure" reads like it went to everyone. One sentence about their actual work fixes it.
A few smaller ones:
- asking about the stipend, certificate or work-from-home options in the letter
- leaving out your availability, when the dates are often what decides who gets picked
- sending the letter as a Word file instead of a PDF
If you're applying by email, let the body of the email be the cover letter and attach your resume as a PDF.
Before you send it
Read the letter aloud once and check the names in the greeting and paragraph 3. Every project you mention in the letter has to be on your resume as well. No resume yet? Start from one of our CV templates so the two documents look like a set.
First-years still deciding where to apply should read how to get an internship in your first year before writing anything. Applying for a full-time job instead? The longer version is in our guide to a cover letter for freshers.
This week, pick one internship, write the letter to the format above and send it before you start second-guessing.
Our Internships listings have openings you can try it on.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an internship cover letter be?
Aim for 150 to 200 words. That is three short paragraphs, which a recruiter can read in under a minute. Anything longer usually means you are repeating your resume.
What do I write in a cover letter for internship with no experience?
Write about what you have done instead of jobs you haven't had: a course project, a college society role, a competition, a skill you taught yourself and used. One concrete example with a result is worth more than a list of qualities.
Is an internship application letter the same as a cover letter?
Mostly, yes. An application letter is often a little more formal and is sometimes sent on its own, for example to a college or a government office. A cover letter always goes along with a resume. The structure is the same.
Should I mention a stipend in my internship cover letter?
No. Leave stipend and leave questions for later, once they have shown interest. The cover letter is only about why you want this internship and what you can bring to it.
