How to Write a Cover Letter for a Fresher Job (with Samples)
A cover letter for freshers is a short letter, four paragraphs and under a page, that sits next to your resume and tells one recruiter why you want this particular job and why you can do it. Your resume lists facts, and the letter takes two or three of them and ties them to what the company needs.
Key takeaways
- A fresher cover letter is four short paragraphs, 200 to 300 words, fitting on one page.
- Write one when the post asks, when a person reads every application, or when you email HR directly.
- Use paragraph 2 for two specific pieces of proof from your resume, with small numbers where you have them.
- Keep a master letter and tailor the proof, the company paragraph and the names in about ten minutes.
- Skip overpraise, vague claims, salary, family details and apologies for being a fresher, and proofread on your phone.
Most freshers either skip it or fill a page with general praise about "learning and growth", and either way the chance is gone. Below are the four-paragraph structure, two complete samples (one tech, one non-tech), and a quick way to tailor each letter in under ten minutes.
Do freshers really need a cover letter?
For a mass campus drive, no: they want your resume and your test score and nothing more. Write one when:
- the job post or form asks for one
- you are applying to a smaller company or startup where a person, not software, reads every application
- you are writing to HR directly by email, in which case the email itself does the job of the cover letter
In those cases, a missing or lazy letter tells them you didn't bother, while a sharp one earns a borderline resume a second look.
Cover letter for freshers: the format
Keep it to one page, in the same font as your resume (if you built your resume from one of our CV templates, reuse its font and header), with normal margins. Put your name and contact details at the top, then the date, then the company's name and city. Address a real person if the job post names one ("Dear Ms Rao"). If it doesn't, "Dear Hiring Manager" is fine. Skip "Dear Sir/Madam" and "To whom it may concern", which read as if copied from a 1990s letter-writing book.
Save it as a PDF named like your resume: Firstname_Lastname_Cover_Letter.pdf.
How to write a cover letter in four short paragraphs
Paragraph 1: who you are and what you want
Keep it to two or three sentences. Name the role and where you saw it, and say what you're studying or have just finished. Then add one line that hints at why you fit. Don't open with "I am writing to apply for", because the recruiter already knows.
Paragraph 2: proof you can do the work
Give this one four or five sentences, more than any other paragraph. Choose two things from your resume that match the job description, such as a project, an internship, a college role or a certification you actually used, and say what you did in each and what came out of it. Even small numbers help: "cut the report time from two days to half a day", "handled stock entries for 140 items".
Paragraph 3: why this company
Write two or three sentences nobody could send to a different company. Mention a product you use, the sector they work in, a branch in your city, or a line from their careers page that matched what you want. Can't find anything specific? Then you haven't read enough about them yet.
Paragraph 4: a polite close
In a sentence or two, say you'd welcome an interview and that your resume is attached, then sign off with "Regards" or "Yours sincerely" and your full name. Don't beg, and don't write "I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience".
Fresher cover letter sample: tech role
This is for a BTech computer science student in Coimbatore applying to a software trainee role at a mid-sized company. The person and the company are fictional.

Hiring Manager Kaveri Software Solutions, Bengaluru
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm applying for the Graduate Software Trainee role posted on your careers page. I'm in the final year of BTech Computer Science at a college in Coimbatore, and over the last two years most of my free time has gone into building small web apps that real people use.
For my final-year project, a team of three of us built a library booking system for our college using Python, Django and PostgreSQL. I wrote the booking and fine calculation module and the tests for it, and the library has used it for one semester with about 600 students. During a six-week internship at a local logistics firm, I wrote SQL queries that replaced a manual Excel report, so the daily dispatch summary now takes minutes instead of most of a morning.
Your job post says trainees work on internal tools for retail clients. That is the kind of work I've enjoyed most: small tools that save someone time every day. I also read your engineering team's post on moving reports to scheduled jobs, and it was close to what I tried at my internship.
I'd welcome the chance to talk about the role. My resume is attached.
Regards, Sneha Iyer
Notice that "hardworking" and "passionate" never appear, yet the letter shows both.
Fresher cover letter sample: non-tech role
This one is for a BCom graduate in Lucknow applying to an accounts executive opening at a regional company. Again, both are fictional.

Ms Nidhi Saxena HR, Shreeji Freight Pvt Ltd, Lucknow
Dear Ms Saxena,
I'm writing about the Accounts Executive (Fresher) opening you shared on LinkedIn last week. I completed my BCom this year, and I'd like to start my career in accounts at a company where I can learn how a growing business manages its books.
In my final year I did a three-month internship at a CA firm in Aliganj, where I prepared GST working sheets for eleven small clients and reconciled their purchase registers with the GSTR-2B data each month. I also handled the accounts of our college commerce festival, tracking about ₹1.8 lakh of sponsorship and spending in Tally and presenting the final statement to the faculty committee.
Shreeji Freight has branches across Uttar Pradesh, and I understand that means a lot of vendor payments and branch-level reconciliation. That is exactly the work I practised at the CA firm, and I'd like to do it at a larger scale.
I'm available for an interview at your convenience, in person or online. My resume is attached for your reference.
Yours sincerely, Arjun Mehra
Arjun has never had a full-time job, and his letter is still specific. It gives a number of clients, a tool he used and a sum of money he was trusted with, which is what experience looks like when you're a fresher.
How to tailor a cover letter in under ten minutes
You won't manage a fresh letter for every application. Keep a master letter and change four things in it.
- Read the job post (3 minutes): underline the two or three skills or tasks it repeats. Those are your targets.
- Swap your proof (3 minutes): in paragraph 2, pick the project or internship from your resume that best matches those targets. Reword one sentence to use the job post's own words where they're honest.
- Rewrite paragraph 3 (3 minutes): open the company's website or LinkedIn page and find one specific detail. Write two sentences around it.
- Fix the basics (1 minute): the company name, the role title, the person's name and the date. Then read the first line aloud.
The last step catches the mistake that sinks more fresher letters than any other, where a letter addressed to one company names a different company further down. Check for it every time.
Common mistakes in a fresher cover letter
Letters from final-year students go wrong in the same few ways.
The worst is repeating the resume line by line. The recruiter has your resume open already, so the letter should pick and explain rather than list. Next comes overpraise ("your esteemed organisation, a leader in the industry"), which says nothing and wastes your best paragraph.
Vague claims hurt too. "Good communication skills" means nothing without proof. "Anchored our department's annual fest for 900 people" means something. And leave out salary expectations, family details, your percentage in Class 10 and any apology for being a fresher. Everyone applying for a fresher role is a fresher.
Proofread it on your phone before sending, since that's where plenty of recruiters will open it, and a typo stands out on a page this short.
Your next step
Write your master letter today, using the four-paragraph structure and whichever sample is closer to your field. If the resume needs work first, get it into shape with the step-by-step guide to a fresher resume. Applying for internships rather than jobs? Read how to write a cover letter for an internship, which uses a shorter format.
Once the letter is done, make the resume that goes with it look just as clean by starting from one of our CV templates and using the same font for both.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cover letter necessary for a fresher job in India?
Not always. Many campus drives and job portals never ask for one. But when a job post asks for it, or when you email a company directly, a short cover letter is expected, and a good one gives the recruiter a reason to open your resume carefully.
How long should a fresher cover letter be?
Between 200 and 300 words, in four short paragraphs. It should fit on one page with plenty of white space. If yours runs longer, trim paragraph 2 first.
Can I use the same cover letter for every company?
You can keep the same skeleton, but the opening line, one sentence about the company and the skills you pick should change every time. Recruiters spot a letter that could have gone to anyone.
Should I write the cover letter in the email body or attach it?
If you are emailing HR directly, the email body usually works as the cover letter, so keep it shorter. If the application form has a separate upload field for a cover letter, attach it as a PDF.
