Financial Analyst Resume for Freshers (with Sample)

Recruiters read a financial analyst resume for freshers with one question in mind: has this person already done the work in some form? Nobody expects you to have had a job. They do expect a model you built, a valuation you can defend, Excel skills you can show on a laptop, and exams written down exactly as they stand. Below you'll find what to include and how to word your projects and certifications, with a complete sample at the end.

Key takeaways

  • Lead with projects such as a three-statement model or a DCF valuation, because they prove what a skills list only claims.
  • Each project line should say what you built, which methods you used and the conclusion you reached.
  • Write "CFA Level I candidate" or "Passed CFA Level I"; only those who pass all three levels and meet the work experience rule are charterholders.
  • Name the exact CA level or group, or FRM part, you have cleared, and copy course titles from the certificate.
  • Write case competition results exactly, such as "semi-finalist", with one line on what your team recommended.

Who hires freshers as financial analysts?

"Financial analyst" covers several desks. Equity research support teams, many in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Gurugram, update company models after results. FP&A (financial planning and analysis) teams build budgets and explain why spending missed the plan. Credit analysts at banks and NBFCs (non-banking financial companies) judge whether a borrower can repay. Valuation teams at advisory firms value businesses for deals.

You can use one core resume for all of them and just change which project goes first. Lead with a valuation for research and deals, a variance analysis for FP&A, and a ratio and cash flow study for credit.

What a financial analyst resume for freshers needs to prove

You get the call when a recruiter finishes your page convinced you can read a balance sheet, build a working model and form a view on a company.

So your projects section carries more weight than your skills list. "Financial modelling" written in a skills column is a claim. A project line that says you built a three-statement model of a listed cement company from five years of annual reports is evidence. The three statements are the income statement (profit and loss), the balance sheet and the cash flow statement, and a three-statement model links them so a change in one flows through the others.

Put your sections in this order: summary, education, projects, internship, case competitions, certifications and exams, skills. Lay it out on one of our CV templates so the page stays clean.

How to describe modelling and valuation work

Give each project a title naming the company or sector. Underneath, two or three lines say what you built, which methods you used and where you landed.

Weak: "Did DCF valuation of a company."

Better: "Valued a listed Indian paint company using a five-year DCF, cross-checked against P/E and EV/EBITDA multiples of three peers; the DCF value was below the market price, and the note explains which growth assumption drove the gap."

DCF is discounted cash flow: you forecast the cash a business will generate and discount it back to today. P/E (price to earnings) and EV/EBITDA (enterprise value to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) are multiples used to compare a company with its peers. Put these terms on your resume only if you can explain them without notes. You will be asked.

Coursework counts, as long as you built the model yourself; put the course name in brackets after the project title.

Always state your conclusion. A model with no view is half the job. Interviewers like to open with "So, would you buy it?" and our financial analyst interview questions guide covers how to handle that and the accounting questions that follow.

Excel skills that belong on a finance resume

List only the functions and features you can use without searching. On a finance resume, the ones that get noticed are INDEX with MATCH or XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables, data tables for sensitivity analysis, NPV, XNPV and IRR, and Goal Seek. A sensitivity table shows how a valuation changes as two assumptions move, for example the discount rate and the long-term growth rate.

Power BI or Python on your resume means you need something small you built with it, ready to show. If you've only opened a tool once, leave it off.

Case competitions and timed challenges

A finance case competition earns its line when you can say how far you got and what your team argued. "Finalist (top 8 of 120 teams), inter-college M&A case competition, 2025: recommended against the acquisition on valuation grounds" tells a recruiter more than a participation certificate.

Write the result exactly. A semi-finalist is a semi-finalist.

Timed problem-solving challenges belong here as well. CampusFirst India's Compete challenges are free and timed, with one counted attempt per challenge, an all-India leaderboard, worked solutions for every question and a certificate for everyone who completes. A certificate shows you finished. An all-India rank shows how you did against other students, so write the rank if it's a good one and leave it out if it isn't.

How to show certifications honestly

Finance resumes go wrong here more than anywhere else, and recruiters do check.

CFA Institute's exam has three levels: Level I, Level II and Level III. Passing Level I does not make you a CFA. You become a charterholder only after passing all three and completing the required work experience. So if you have booked Level I, write "CFA Level I candidate" with the exam window. If you have passed it, write "Passed CFA Level I" with the month and year. Never write "CFA" alone after your name.

Be just as careful with other qualifications. ICAI's CA course runs CA Foundation, CA Intermediate (two groups) and CA Final, so write exactly which level or group you cleared. GARP's FRM has Part I and Part II. For an online financial modelling course, write the provider and course title as they appear on the certificate, not "Certified Financial Modeller", unless that is literally the name of the credential.

Course certificates go below your projects, because a single model you built and can defend counts for more than three of them.

Finance: three-statement modelling, DCF, comparable companies, ratios
Other: PowerPoint, basic Power BI

Every project in it ends in a conclusion. The CFA line says "candidate", and the course sits below the projects where it belongs. The working capital study is small, yet it's real data from a real business, which gives a credit or FP&A interviewer plenty to talk about. Got a local project like that, from a family shop or a friend's startup? Use it.

Mistakes to cut before you send it

Cut subjects listed as skills (Corporate Finance, Derivatives). Every finance student studied them, so they say nothing; move the work you did in those courses into projects instead. And if you write "tracked Indian equity markets", expect to be asked what the Nifty did last week and why.

Your next step

This week, pick one listed Indian company. Download its last five annual reports from its website or the stock exchange and start the three-statement model. Nothing else on your resume will carry as much weight as that one project.

Build your resume on one of our CV templates, and try a free Compete challenge to see where you rank against students across India.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put CFA on my resume if I have only registered for Level I?

Yes, written as "CFA Level I candidate" with the exam window you have booked. Don't write "CFA" alone, "CFA certified" or "CFA Level 1 cleared" unless you have the result. Only someone who has passed all three levels and met the work experience rule is a charterholder.

What if my college never taught financial modelling?

Build one model on your own from a listed company's annual reports and put it under projects. Recruiters care that you built it and can explain it, not where you learnt it.

Should a finance fresher list case competitions they didn't win?

List them if you reached a later round or did real analysis you can talk about. Write the round you reached honestly, such as "semi-finalist", and one line on what your team recommended.

How long should a financial analyst resume be for a fresher?

One page. Two projects, one internship if you have it, your exams and your Excel skills fit comfortably. Anything longer usually means coursework lists that recruiters skip.
