BCom Fresher Resume: Format and Sample

Your BCom fresher resume gets one page to prove you'd be useful in an accounts team, a bank branch or on an analyst desk from week one. Nobody expects work experience from a commerce graduate. What recruiters look for is the tools you can really use, an honest record of any CA, CMA or CFA attempts, and some sign that you've handled real numbers outside an exam hall. You'll find the format here, then a full sample, then the details commerce students get wrong most.

Key takeaways

  • Keep a BCom fresher resume to one page and change the summary and section order for each kind of role.
  • Name the exact tool and the tasks, such as TallyPrime for GST invoicing, instead of "proficient in Tally".
  • Write CA, CMA or CFA levels exactly as cleared, with the month and year, and never claim more.
  • Call a CA firm summer stint an internship unless ICAI registered you as an articled assistant.
  • Leave out photo, date of birth, father's name and subjects listed as skills.

Starting from a blank page? Read the fresher resume guide for India for the basics first. No internship yet? The guide to a resume with no experience is the one for you.

Which jobs is a BCom resume usually for?

Most BCom applications go to four kinds of job, and each one reads your page with a different first question.

RoleWhat the recruiter checks first
Accounts executive or junior accountantTally, GST and TDS basics, bank reconciliation, accuracy
Audit assistant at a CA firmYour CA level, audit exposure, any time spent at a firm
Bank operations or relationship rolesCommunication, comfort with customers, KYC awareness, numbers
Finance analyst, FP&A or credit analystExcel depth, ratio analysis, a project built on real data

FP&A stands for financial planning and analysis, the team that builds budgets and forecasts. KYC is "know your customer", the identity checks a bank runs before opening an account.

Four resumes would be overkill. Keep one master version and, for each role, change the summary line and the section order. Accounts jobs get Tally and the internship first. A bank branch wants communication and customer work up top, and analyst jobs want Excel and your project.

BCom fresher resume format, section by section

Follow this order. For a clean layout without a fight with Word, build it on one of our CV templates.

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Summary (two lines)
  3. Education
  4. Professional qualifications (only if you have cleared something)
  5. Internship or articleship
  6. Skills and tools
  7. Projects
  8. Achievements and activities

Summary: two lines on what you are and which role you want. "BCom (Hons) graduate with CA Intermediate Group I cleared, looking for an accounts role" beats a paragraph about being hardworking.

Education: degree with (Hons) or (General) written exactly, college, university, years and your CGPA or percentage. Add Class XII with the stream and Class X, one line each. Accounts and banking recruiters in India regularly ask for both board marks.

Got a strong project, say a real ratio analysis with five years of data? Move it above skills.

How to show Tally and Excel on a BCom resume

Nearly every commerce resume says "Proficient in Tally and MS Office", so the line tells a recruiter nothing. Name the product, then the tasks.

Tally's current product is TallyPrime. The older one, which many college labs and small firms still run, is Tally.ERP 9. Write the one you used, then what you did in it. "TallyPrime: GST sales invoicing and bank reconciliation for a 40-ledger trading business (internship)" invites a specific question, and you can answer it.

Treat Excel the same way. List the functions you can use without looking them up: SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, pivot tables, data validation, charts. If you have only used SUM and formatting, write "Excel (basic)" and spend two weekends on pivot tables and lookups before applying for analyst roles. Put a course certificate on the page only if you can still do what it says.

How to write CA, CMA or CFA attempts honestly

People hiring at CA firms and in finance teams know these qualifications inside out. Be exact. ICAI's CA course has three levels: CA Foundation, CA Intermediate (two groups) and CA Final. The Institute of Cost Accountants of India runs CMA at the same three levels, Foundation, Intermediate and Final. CFA Institute's exam has Level I, Level II and Level III, and passing Level I does not make you "CFA certified". You become a charterholder only after all three levels plus work experience.

Write exactly what you have cleared, with the month and year:

  • CA Intermediate (ICAI): Group I cleared, May 2025
  • CA Foundation (ICAI): cleared, December 2023
  • CFA Level I candidate, exam booked for 2027

Avoid "CA Inter (pursuing)" when you have only cleared Foundation, and never "CFA Level 1 certified". Both get checked. You don't have to list every failed attempt. If you registered but haven't cleared anything yet, leave it off and bring it up only if asked. And if you stopped CA after Foundation to take a job, that's fine. Keep the Foundation line and have one calm sentence ready for why.

Internships at CA firms: what to write

Lots of BCom students spend a summer at a local CA firm. Unless ICAI had you registered as an articled assistant, that was an internship, not articleship, so call it one. Started articleship and left midway? Show it as articleship with the real dates, because it's genuine work experience.

The weak version usually reads "Worked at a CA firm. Did GST and audit work." Give the line a verb, a volume and a tool instead: "Filed monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns for 12 small business clients on the GST portal." The sample below has four lines like that.

(Vouching, in the sample's second internship bullet, means checking each entry in the books against its bill or receipt.) Keep the firm's clients unnamed. "A wholesale trading client" is enough, and it shows you understand confidentiality.

Look at what it does. The summary names the role, the qualification lines say exactly what was cleared, and each internship bullet carries a number a recruiter can ask about. The treasurer line is small, yet it shows Sneha has kept real accounts for real people. Notice what's missing too: no photo, date of birth or father's name. Those are biodata habits, and private companies don't need them.

Mistakes that sink commerce resumes

The most common one is listing subjects as skills. "Financial Accounting, Corporate Law, Cost Accounting" are subjects every BCom student studied. Tools and tasks are skills.

Next comes the two-page resume. Without a full-time job behind you, page two is padding. While you're cutting, drop "dedicated" and "hardworking" and let the bullets do that work.

Never copy a classmate's skills section. If an interviewer asks you to post a purchase entry with input GST in TallyPrime and you can't, the whole page loses credibility.

What to do this week

Start with your qualification lines, written exactly as cleared. Turn your internship or project into three or four bullets with numbers. Open every tool you've listed and make sure you can still use it. Then shortlist ten accounts or finance openings in Jobs and adjust the summary line for each.

When your draft is ready, move it into one of our CV templates and start applying through Jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention CA on my resume if I haven't cleared it?

Mention it only for what you have actually cleared, such as CA Foundation or one group of CA Intermediate, with the month and year. If you registered but have not cleared any level, leave it off the resume and talk about it in the interview if asked.

Is a one-page resume enough for a BCom fresher?

Yes. With no full-time work experience, one page holds your education, qualifications, an internship, your tools and a project. A second page usually means subjects, hobbies or personal details that recruiters skip.

Should a BCom fresher add a photo and date of birth?

No. Private-sector recruiters in accounts, banking and analyst roles don't need a photo, date of birth, father's name or marital status. Leave them out unless a specific application form asks for them.

Which version of Tally should I write on my resume?

Write the one you actually used. Tally's current product is TallyPrime and the older one is Tally.ERP 9. Then add what you did in it, such as GST invoicing or bank reconciliation, so the line can be tested in an interview.
